Instruction

Learn to play the Scottish-Irish fiddle!

I teach both individual students and group workshops.

Beginners learn the basics (how to hold the instrument and the bow, etc), learn how to learn tunes, learn how to memorize and how to read music, learn to play by ear. More advanced players can learn the art of spontaneous ornamentation, learn to lilt with the bow (shed your classical fortissimo!), learn the secret behind various cool ornaments (they can often be hard to figure out), learn session etiquette, and start down the road toward improvisation.

If you are a beginner, what you learn may be applied to any style of fiddling as you progress, so beginning instruction is "non-denominational" -- what you learn from me is good basic technique which can be applied to any kind of music, from Irish or American fiddling, to Balkan or jazz, to classical, etc.

Each student's instruction is tailored to the needs of the individual student. Non-harmful technique is important. Fun is a goal.

Anyone of any age can learn to fiddle. What are you waiting for?
